Hands-On
Management
The
UMD Professional Hands-on Management programme for architects comprises six workshops over a six month period and is a comprehensive
and intensive business management series for architectural practice
principals, partners and directors.
The programme was successfully piloted in the RIBA Southern region in 2002 and is now running throughout the country.
The
programme covers business strategy, people management, finance, marketing,
strategic forecasting and leadership.
The programme's workshops provide an opportunity
for delegates to try out management concepts and ideas through the
use of an extended case study of an architectural practice. Delegates 'purchase' and 'manage' an architectural practice, developing in the process the necessary skills to deal with all the different management and business issues as
they arise.
Between
each workshop delegates are encouraged to carry out assignments in their own businesses,
putting into practice the management theory and skills learned on the programme.
Architectural practices
that have attended the programme report a range of important benefits including
a greater sense of control and direction, increased profitability,
and greater confidence in business decision-making.
The
Hands-on Management programme attracts significant financial subsidies
from many Business Links around the country, making it a highly
cost-effective programme.
